Community visit to East Kent Mencap
Today Sheerness Town Council officer Becci visited East Kent Mencap Swale and met with Rebecca Walker-Community, Housing and Hub Manager-to see how funding from Sheerness Town Council’s Community Grant Scheme has helped support their move to a fantastic new home at Delacey Hall.
East Kent Mencap supports people with learning disabilities by providing activities, social opportunities, support, and community programmes that help members build confidence, independence, friendships, and wellbeing.
The Swale Hub previously operated from Trinity Hall, but the new venue is much brighter, more welcoming, and importantly all on one floor, making it far more accessible and comfortable for members with different needs.
Our 2025 Community Grant helped purchase new furniture for the hub, including:
• Dining tables and chairs
• Comfortable tub chairs
• Craft tables for activities and workshops
It was lovely to see members outside enjoying fitness activities during the visit and making the most of the space and sunshine.
Sheerness Town Council has proudly supported East Kent Mencap over the years through several Community Grants, including previous funding for kitchen equipment and gardening equipment to help expand activities for members.
Rebecca also explained that they are always grateful for donations to help support sessions and activities, particularly:
• Arts and crafts materials
• DIY and upcycling supplies
• Gardening equipment
• Photography and media resources
• Sporting equipment for fitness sessions
