DO YOU KNOW WHICH COUNCIL DOES WHAT?
It’s not always easy to know who to contact when you have a problem or want to report something in Sheerness.
Sheerness Town Council, Swale Borough Council and Kent County Council all have different responsibilities, so we’ve created this handy guide to help.
But what does Sheerness Town Council do?
We work at the most local level, with our focus firmly on Sheerness and our community.
Some of the things we do include:
• Organise community events, including our Christmas event and St George’s Day celebrations.
• Organise the annual Remembrance Sunday Service and parade in Sheerness.
• Provide community grants to local charities, groups and organisations that benefit Sheerness residents.
• Provide CCTV in areas of need to help tackle local concerns, including anti-social behaviour and wildlife crime.
• Provide and maintain defibrillators and bleed kits across the town.
• Provide and maintain bus shelters.
• Work with the ACT Team from HMP Standford Hill on practical projects to improve areas around Sheerness, including painting, maintenance, litter clearing and other environmental improvements.
• Support improvements to the High Street and public spaces, including hanging baskets and other local projects.
• Organise and support community litter picks and environmental projects.
• Work with Kent Police and other organisations to raise and address issues affecting our community.
• Raise residents’ concerns with Swale Borough Council, Kent County Council and other organisations when the responsibility sits with them.
• Support local organisations and help connect residents with the right services.
• Hold Full Council meetings where residents are welcome to attend and raise local issues during the public forum.
We don’t have responsibility for everything. Services including bins, fly-tipping, planning, parking and street cleaning generally sit with Swale Borough Council. Potholes, highways, street lighting, education and social care generally sit with Kent County Council.
Our role is local. We listen to residents, invest in Sheerness and work with other organisations to make practical improvements to our town.
Save our guide for future reference and share it to help others know who to contact.
